MPs can no longer can head governing bodies of colleges under NU

The decision came in line with a previous High Court order

The National University (NU) has decided that from now on MPs will not be allowed to head governing bodies (GB) of its colleges.

In an official notification on Monday, it said that the move came in line with the High Court's order.

“Lawmakers will be replaced by the divisional commissioners at colleges in divisional cities, deputy commissioners at districts, and Upazila nirbahi officers (UNO) at the Upazilas, until further notice,” it said.

NU authorities, in the notice, also thanked the MPs for sincerely discharging their duties so far.

Earlier on July 16, the High Court released the full text of a verdict that declared illegal, the nomination or appointment of MPs as chairmen of governing bodies of local colleges and other educational institutions across the country.

On November 25 last year, the High Court issued the order following a writ petition challenging the NU’s decision to appoint Awami League lawmaker in Satkhira SM Jaglul Haider as president of the governing body of the local Atunjan Mohila College.
